How to Build a Microservice in Java with Spring Cloud

Microservices introduce challenges that don't exist in a traditional monolithic application: service discovery, inter-service communication, centralized configuration, API routing, and distributed failures.

In this tutorial, we build a small e-commerce-style microservice architecture with Java 21, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud.

We'll create:

  • Product Service
  • Order Service
  • Eureka Server
  • API Gateway

Then we'll add:

  • Service discovery with Eureka
  • Inter-service communication with OpenFeign
  • API routing with Spring Cloud Gateway
  • Centralized configuration with Spring Cloud Config
